Chiropractic for musculoskeletal pain care

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that treats mechanical problems affecting bones, joints, muscles and nerves. While it is best recognised for resolving problems of the spine such as neck or back pain, there is evidence supporting chiropractic for many other musculoskeletal disorders.

Manipulation is often used for stiff or painful joints of the spine and limbs. Our chiropractors use gentle McTimoney manipulation techniques to reduce pain and restore joint movement. This is combined with other approaches, including:

  • Joint manipulation/mobilisation
  • Muscle stretches or massage
  • Individual exercise prescription
  • Help with psychological aspects of painful conditions
  • Advice and teaching about prevention and self-management

What to expect when you visit us

  1. After booking your appointment a medical screening form will be emailed to you. You should complete and return this online. Your chiropractor will have reviewed this before you attend (you may complete this form in the clinic if preferred).
  2. Your first visit takes about 1 hour. Your chiropractor will take a case history about your presenting condition, focussing on how it affects you as an individual. You will be examined to exclude serious conditions and reach a working diagnosis
  3. Your diagnosis is explained and a treatment plan agreed with you, taking into account risks and benefits of care approach options and your preferences. You will usually start treatment at your first visit.
  4. Follow up visits last about 30 minutes and include a review of your progress, consideration of any modifications to your treatment plan and treatment. Most patients receive 2-6 visits at weekly or twice-weekly intervals, depending on the severity and nature of the condition. Signs of progress are usually expected within the first 4 visits.
